Timneh African Grey

The Timneh African Grey, (Psittacus erithacus timneh), is the smaller cousin to the Congo Grey, a much darker gray body color and a maroon, rust colored tail, not to mention their smaller size makes them easy to distinguish from the Congo. Their beaks are a horn color on the top and black on the bottom, the iris is a pale yellow and the skin surrounding the eye is white.

Their homerange consists of Sierra Leone, southern Guinea, Liberia, and the Ivory Coast.

Always a very inexpensive import, I remember when a Timneh could be purchased for $100.00. This of course being a wild bird, they would hang from the back of the cage and growl and scream at all who would stop and look. Because of their availability and inexpense not many were put into breeding situations, but as imports closed, more and more aviculturists began to discover the Timneh and the wonderful babies that they produced.

Unlike the Congo, I find the Timneh's personality to be much more out going and their willingness to accept more people in the family. As for talking ability, they are equal with the Congo in that catagory. Their smaller size and friendly personality have given them a place in aviculture and their popularity is growing every year. Their care and diet is the same as the Congo and even though they are more out going, they are still creatures of habit and like routine as much as the Congo does. For someone who wants big bird qualities in a small bird package, the Timneh might just be for you. It is my favorite parrot.
