They originally are from the Tanimbar Islands of Indonesia, but over
the years the Tanimbars were deforested very heavily and these cockatoos
were imported in very large numbers, making them one of the cheapest cockatoos
to buy during the days of importation. Now that importation is all but
a memory, we as aviculturists have been scrambling to establish this wonderful
cockatoo in aviculture, though many of the wild caught are still available,
they are not an easy bird to breed.
We have been successful with two pairs. These toos can take upupwards of 5 years before they settle down and start to raise a family, which makes them not too readily available to the pet trade. However, if you happen to chance across one of these little beauties you will not be disappointed. They are absolutely wonderful as hand-fed babies, very affectionate, can learn a few words, and love to be held. The downside is they can be loud at times, can get too "clingy" and if not properly raised can run into problems down the road with screaming and feather plucking.
A well socialized baby can be a wonderful addition to anyone's household. They are very smart and are known for their ability to escape from most cages. Padlocks seem to be the only thing they can't open up! They need a varied diet with lots of fruits and vegetables, very few nuts and seed as they are prone to obesity. Legumes and pasta can also be added to the diet. If your looking for a very animated pet with lots of love to give, a goffins cockatoo might just be for you.
